Mariska Hargitay Avoided Her Famous Mother’s Movies for Years, Until She Discovered the Heartbreaking Truth Behind Her Voice
To millions of movie fans, Jayne Mansfield was a glamorous Hollywood icon. But to her daughter, Mariska Hargitay, she was someone she barely had the chance to know.
For years, Mariska struggled to connect the mother she had lost as a toddler with the larger-than-life blonde star the world remembered. And there was one particular thing about Jayne’s on-screen appearances that made watching her films especially difficult.
Mariska was just three years old when her mother died in a tragic car accident in 1967. Growing up, she heard stories about Jayne’s intelligence, warmth, and wonderful sense of humor. Yet the woman described by family members seemed almost unrecognizable compared with the exaggerated Hollywood personality she saw on screen.
The voice that kept her from watching her mother’s films
For much of her childhood, Mariska avoided watching Jayne’s movies. It wasn’t that she wanted to forget her mother. Rather, the glamorous persona and breathy, exaggerated voice Jayne used in public felt disconnected from the mother Mariska had heard so much about.
“I never wanted to hear that voice,” she once admitted.
As the years passed, however, her perspective began to change. Instead of accepting the Hollywood image as the complete story, she became determined to discover the woman behind it.
That personal journey eventually inspired her 2025 documentary, My Mom Jayne, in which she explored her mother’s life through family memories, photographs, and previously unseen footage.
During the process, Mariska came across recordings that revealed something she had long wanted to hear: Jayne speaking naturally, without the exaggerated voice associated with her public image.

The experience was deeply emotional. For Mariska, hearing those recordings offered a rare opportunity to feel closer to the mother she had spent decades trying to understand.
Motherhood gave her a completely different perspective
There was another turning point in Mariska’s journey: becoming a mother herself.
As a little girl, she had imagined a simple childhood with her mother, filled with ordinary moments like staying at home and baking cookies. Only later, as an adult and a parent, did she begin to appreciate the complicated pressures Jayne had experienced while raising a family and navigating Hollywood fame.
One particularly emotional memory Mariska shared involved a dream in which her mother visited her home.
In the dream, she was thrilled to see Jayne again and immediately wanted to show her all the photographs of her displayed downstairs.

But there was a heartbreaking catch: her mother told her she had to leave.
Even in a dream, Mariska couldn’t escape the feeling that their time together was too short.
The mother behind the Hollywood legend
For decades, audiences remembered Jayne Mansfield as a glamorous actress whose image became part of Hollywood history.
But Mariska’s search was never really about rediscovering a celebrity. It was about understanding the woman who was taken from her before she was old enough to form lasting memories.
Through old recordings, photographs, family stories, and the making of My Mom Jayne, she found a way to piece together a relationship that life had given her so little time to experience.
She may never have had the ordinary childhood moments she once dreamed about, but she found something meaningful in learning who her mother really was.
And perhaps that’s the most moving part of her story. The world saw Jayne Mansfield as a Hollywood superstar, while her daughter simply wished she could have had more time with her mom.
