Elon Musk Breaks Silence After Spending Over $450 Million Backing Republicans, Only to Watch Them Lose Congress
Elon Musk poured hundreds of millions of dollars into helping Republicans secure victory in the midterm elections. But when the results came in, the party he supported had lost control of both chambers of Congress. Now, the billionaire has finally responded, and his reaction took a rather sarcastic turn.
The Tesla and SpaceX founder reportedly spent more than $450 million supporting Republican candidates during the election cycle, making him the biggest individual donor in US election history.
A considerable portion of that money went toward races in Texas, the state Musk made his home in 2020 and where Tesla, SpaceX, and X have since established their headquarters.
Musk had previously been one of Donald Trump’s most prominent financial supporters during the 2024 presidential campaign. In 2025, he also took charge of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Despite his considerable financial involvement, however, Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to projections from the Associated Press.
The political developments were accompanied by a reported decline of approximately 6% in Tesla and SpaceX shares during early Wednesday premarket trading.
Texas delivers unexpected results as Musk turns to jokes
Some of the most significant Democratic victories came from Texas, a state where Musk has considerable business interests.
Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the US Senate race, marking a major breakthrough for Texas Democrats, who had struggled to win statewide elections for decades.
The governor’s race also produced a Democratic victory, with Gina Hinojosa defeating incumbent Republican Greg Abbott.
Musk eventually addressed the election results on X, choosing humor rather than a lengthy political statement.

“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” he wrote, accompanied by a shrugging emoji.
His comment referenced a conspiracy theory that circulated following the 2024 election. The unfounded claim suggested that Musk had somehow used his Starlink satellite network to manipulate election results.
He followed that post with another sarcastic remark: “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now.”
The comment appeared to reference SpaceX’s ambitions to develop orbital computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence. It also attracted attention because Hinojosa has previously called for a pause on the construction of new AI data centers in Texas.
According to Gizmodo, Musk also removed an earlier post in which he had encouraged his followers to “vote red today.”
Not every Musk-backed candidate lost
Despite the broader Republican setbacks, Musk’s political spending did produce some victories.
Forbes reported that 18 candidates supported by the billionaire won their respective races, although most of those contests attracted considerably less national attention.
Still, the overall election results marked a significant political setback for a man who had invested an extraordinary amount of money trying to influence the balance of power in Washington.
