Old social media posts by Donald Trump criticizing Russell Brand and questioning Katy Perry’s decision to marry him have resurfaced following the comedian’s guilty verdict in a London court.
On Thursday, November 5, a jury at Southwark Crown Court found the 51-year-old Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Following the verdict, Judge Justice Bennathan ordered Brand to remain in custody, warning him that he should expect “a significant custodial term.”
The news quickly brought renewed attention to a series of posts Trump published on Twitter back in 2014.
Trump’s old comments about Russell Brand resurface
The posts originally appeared after Trump watched Brand’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2014.
Clearly unimpressed by the comedian, Trump asked his followers: “What the hell do people see in Russell?”
He went on to describe Brand as a “loser” before turning his attention to the comedian’s former wife, Katy Perry. Trump suggested that she must have been drunk when she married him, adding that Brand had previously sent him a very nice letter of apology.
Brand responded by questioning whether Trump had been drunk when writing his posts. He also took aim at Trump’s hair and family inheritance.
Trump later addressed Perry directly, questioning her decision to marry Brand and describing the comedian as someone with little going for him. He also called Brand’s mind “fried” and referred to him as a “total joke.”
Now, following the court’s verdict, those decade-old posts are circulating again.
Social media users have been revisiting Trump’s comments, with one writing: “At least he got something right. Russell Brand found GUILTY of rape and sexual assault!”
Another commented: “Wild tweet to look back at.”
A third added: “This guy was ahead of the curve.”
From Hollywood marriage to political controversy
Brand and Perry married in a lavish ceremony in India in October 2010, after meeting while working on the film Get Him to the Greek.
Their marriage lasted just 14 months before Brand filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized in 2012.
In the years that followed, Brand’s public image and political associations changed considerably. After allegations against him became public in 2023, he relocated to the United States and developed a substantial following among conservative audiences.
Last year, political commentator Tucker Carlson even called on the Trump administration to “rescue” Brand from what Carlson described as politically motivated charges.
Brand has consistently denied the allegations, previously stating that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
Following the verdict, police said Brand had used his influence, status and fame to prey on and exploit women.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police are reportedly investigating additional rape allegations made by two other women, according to Deadline.
