Anya Taylor-Joy shared a heartbreaking response when she was asked by a reporter if she’d ever been “self-conscious” about her eyes.

The 27-year-old American-Argentine-British actor has become a household name with her exceptional performances in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy and Netflix’s hit series, The Queen’s Gambit. And her portrayal Princess Peach Toadstall in The Super Mario Bros. In a revealing 2016 interview with W Magazine, the transcript for the interview shows that the interviewer asked the Peaky Blinders star: “You have those beautiful eyes and they’re so far apart. When you were a kid, did they make you self-conscious?”

Devastatingly, Taylor-Joy admitted that she has always received ridicule for her eyes on social media, saying: “I can definitely remember when Facebook was a thing and I was never aware that my eyes were far apart and then someone tagged me in a picture with a fish and they were like, ‘This is you ’cause your eyes are like here.'”

Unsurprisingly, she revealed that the post made her “really upset” – to the point where she stopped looking in mirrors for a very long time.

“I still don’t really spend a lot of time in front of mirrors because I don’t really have to deal with my face,” she added, before quipping: “Unfortunately, y’all do.”

By 2019, Taylor-Joy’s perspective on social media had shifted. In a conversation with Vogue, she revealed her initial hesitance towards social media, understanding its significance in an actor’s career. Thankfully, the tide had turned for Taylor-Joy, as she found her social media interactions to be overwhelmingly positive.

“I’ve really enjoyed is that luckily I don’t get a lot of hate on my Instagram. The people who enjoy my work tend to be quite lovely, so it’s nice to have a community of people who are bigging you up,” she said, reflecting a more supportive and empowering online environment.
