A guy who has been compared to Johnny Cash has shocked some people who didn’t realize that he’s the late singer’s grandson.
Cash was a famed country singer and was best known for his songs such as ‘I Walk The Line’, ‘Ring of Fire’ and ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’.
He went on to win a host of awards over his decades-long career, including several Grammys.
Cash died aged 71 in 2003, but his music lives on both through his own tracks still being played across the globe, as well as his grandson, Thomas Gabriel, following in his musical footsteps.
Gabriel recently released a video of him covering his late grandfather’s song ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, and it wasn’t long before people were comparing him to Cash.
Accompanying Gabriel’s performance was his uncle, John Carter Cash, and fellow musician Justin Johnson.
Commenting on a clip that’s doing the sounds on social media of Gabriel singing, one person said: “WOW close your eyes and tell me that’s not Johnny Cash singing.”
“F**kin hell he sounds exactly like [Cash],” said another, as a third went on: “Unbelievable. If I was listening without watching, nobody could tell me that was not Ole Johnny.”
Someone else gushed: “If I didn’t know better I’d swear that was Johnny Cash!”
“GENES be gene-ing,” quipped another.
Others shared sweet sentiments about Gabriel’s famous grandfather probably being proud of him.
One wrote below his YouTube video: “Oh my God. You just sound like your grandpa. I bet he’s proud up there in heaven. Thanks for this song.”
A second added: “Remarkable voice. This man is making his grandpa proud!”
Gabriel was born to Kathy Cash and Thomas Coggins in 1973 when his mother was 16 years old.
He’s said to have fallen in love with music at a very young age, having been lucky enough to tour around with his grandparents Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.
Despite his evident talent, it’s believed that Cash tried to deter his eldest grandchild away from showbiz in the wake of the troubles he faced with addiction.
Initially Gabriel took his advice and worked as a police officer for almost a decade – but his own battles with addiction reportedly caused him to resign.
His addiction saw him go on to have his own run-ins with the law, and it was while he was in prison that Gabriel decided to start songwriting again.
Come 2018 and the singer released his debut album, Long Way Home.
He’s been touring and making music ever since.
