A potential husband-to-be sparked debate online after refusing to spend $10,000 on an engagement ring for his girlfriend because she’s ‘not worth it’.
It’s not exactly what you want to hear from your life-partner, is it?
Taking to Reddit to ask if he was an ‘a**hole’ for not wanting to splash five figures on a diamond ring for his partner of four years, who in his own words is ‘pretty low maintenance’, the man received a grilling in the comments.
He explained that they are both 26 years old and his girlfriend has ‘never cared about designer brands, rarely buys new clothes, and the jewellery she owns was gifted to her’ despite coming from a wealthy family.

The post read: “When I started looking into rings, I discovered moissanite rings, which look similar to diamond rings but are much more affordable. I was looking at rings in the [$]1500 – [$]1800 range.
“When I mentioned this to her she insisted she wanted a real diamond ring and sent me links to a bunch of diamond rings that she liked. The prices ranged from [$]6,500 – [$]10,000. I told her that I wasn’t willing to spend that much.”
He continued: “She seemed genuinely mad and said it wasn’t ‘that expensive’. We got in a pretty big argument over it.
“I told her that it was ridiculous to ask me to spend that much and that I thought she was more reasonable than that.
“She said I was being cheap and that I could afford it and that I was basically saying she wasn’t worth it. I told her no one is worth a [$]10,000 ring.”
Based off the most popular way lovers gauge how much they should spend on an engagement ring, the Reddit user should have a budget of around $13,000 – that’s roughly two months earnings of his $80,000 salary.

While it may seem steep to some, he admitted having already been ‘saving for a while’ – and after he consulted his sister, she sided with his girlfriend, saying that he could afford it and that she ‘didn’t see the big deal’, he wrote, adding that he was ‘being an a**hole’ because his girlfriend had done ‘so much’ for him.
He went on to explain that just six months into dating he was in a serious car accident which left him unable to pay bills, which she picked up.
The post received more than 4,000 comments with the majority of people agreeing that the man was, in fact, the a**hole.
One user commented: “YTA [you’re the a**hole] because you literally told her she wasn’t worth $10,000 which is a really s**tty thing to say to someone you want to spend your life with regardless of the context.”
While another said: “YTA for sure, especially how you’ve been going about this.”
And they kept coming: “OK I’m sorry but YTA.”
That was three years ago, and while we don’t know whether he popped the question, what we do know is that he added: “I’ve definitely reconsidered my stance.”
So what do you think, is he the a**hole?
